Who among us know, exactly what we want to do with our lives, and career?
A few of you do, good for you!
Don’t worry for the rest of you, I’m sure there is a large number of us, who still aren’t sure, what the fuck we want to do job wise, or what we want to do with the rest of our lives.
I’m one of you. I’m approaching 28 years of age this year, and I still don’t know what I want to do for a living. I’m not going to use my ADHD as an excuse to- Okay, yes I am. I can’t think past a couple months at this rate, and setting long term goals are agonizingly painful, but that doesn’t me I don’t see myself enjoying things later in life, even career wise.
I had a lot of friends in high school who already know what they wanted to do for a living and personal set goals. Whether it be Mechanics or Biologists, Home Owners or Business Owners, they were set and knew when they left high school what to study. Argh, I hated school, and college wasn’t for me, neither is a desk job, or owning a house.
When I stop to think about it though, it’s not what I want to do for a living that drives me as so much as the things I want in life. Okay, so I don’t know what kind of job I wanted, but I knew what I wanted out of life, and a career wasn’t the main focus. Hell I can even tell you what I DON’T want from a job!
I realized that some people think differently, I’m one of them, regardless of my reasoning’s. I’m floating down that same life boat with a bunch of other clueless people... Or are we?
If we know what we don’t want in life, and work, does that mean we still have an idea of what we want to do? I don’t know, but I think it gives us a general direction in life, even if it’s not completely clear. I guess we could be utterly clueless and shit-outof- luck.
I just want people to know, if you’re in the same damn boat as me, you’re sure as hell not alone!
Though I can honestly admit, I’m very driven by the things I want in life, minus the career goal part. I still want a car, a nice place, and the ability to take vacations to places I want to visit (Oh shit, a real vacation!?). How I see it, I only spend 40 hours out of the week doing something I don’t like (But I actually like what I am doing now, just so you know). The rest of the week is mine to do as I please with!
So sure, I work to get the cash to do the things I want. I just happen to luck out, I don’t mind doing what I do, job wise. For once, I get vacation time and a decent paycheck to do things, so I’m not complaining too much on that part (I’m sure some of you are not as happy).
What is this really about? Hey, don’t worry if you don’t know what you want to do for the next, god only knows how long your ass is gonna be around, but if you have an idea of what you don’t want, I think you’re still on a really good track here.
I’m saying, on this subject of “What do you want to do in life?”, I think you can still approach it with the opposite terms of “What do you not want in life?” They’re still really good ladders. By going by what you don’t want, helps you get an idea of what you do want.
Knowing what I didn’t want in a job, got me to where I knew what I wanted from it, even if I didn’t care as much about. So the same thing worked with the, “what do I not want in life.” So really in the end, for those of us who don’t know what the hell we’re doing...do we really have a good idea of what we are?
And for those of you wondering, “Why the fuck does this subject bounce all over the place!?” You can thank my ADHD for that, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
