Condemned Building Acknowledged as Health Hazard: City Unable to Move

The Montoya Apartments, an abandoned low-rent housing project near the downtown area, has been officially sealed off according to CDC guidelines after the decaying corpses of several animals and three unidentified humans were found inside.

The police have released the following statement: “Our findings at this time indicate that the loss of human life was likely due to drug abuse and exposure, rather than homicide. The evidence, however, has been contaminated in what is essentially a separate environment created by criminally negligent maintenance. The feral animals that now inhabit the building, while scavengers, exhibit strong pack behavior, and are completely unafraid of humans. Animal control will clear out the building, and demolition will commence as soon as our investigation is complete.”

The police were unable to give a time frame on how long the investigation into the deaths would take; Animal Control and the SA CDC refused comment. Until these offices can coordinate, it is likely that the building will stand for a month, perhaps more.

People who live and work in the area are worried about the possible health risks posed by a building full of decaying flesh, as well they should be. While the CDC has sealed off the building, locals are still skeptical that they are actually safe. Several business, including a butcher’s shop across the street, have decided to close up temporarily, instead of risk exposure to whatever sort of pathogens might be growing in the building, despite the CDC’s assurances that such a measure is unnecessary.

Mr. Tom Jenkis was quoted saying, “Who would want to buy meat from a store across the street from that, anyway? If this doesn’t get cleared up soon, I might have to permanently relocate.”
